Dear Annie,

Last call for Turkeys!  Get your order in now.

Weather in CA is affecting all produce - we'll see berry prices skyrocket and leafies not as lovely, so aren't we excited that Florida season has begun!  Starting this coming week we'll be having more from our local farms while still supplementing with things we cannot get grown here like apples, pears, etc.  We'll continue to source the best quality and value but focus on Florida first.

New Locations in:  Wellington, Southwest Ranches, Coconut Creek, Jupiter, west Boca & Lake Worth, and more - see our complete list and make sure you are picking up in the location closest to you.  If you want to join one of our newer groups, let me know.

Help us clean up our email newsletter mailings - please link to subscribe to those newsletters of interest to you or simply unsubscribe if it's not your thing anymore and thank you for your interest!

This Thanksgiving, show your gratitude in how you feed those you love:

Conventional birds are packed tight indoors in cages. Because of their close quarters, they are routinely fed antibiotics to ward off infection. They dine on GMO soy and corn which was sprayed with pesticides. Their environment is filled with the strong stench of their output and they live very stressed lives. That converts into what we eat to nourish our bodies; it's no wonder there are so many family feuds during the holidays! Remember, you are what we eat!

Organic turkeys are free roaming with room to move and because of that, they taste better. They must have access to fresh air, sunlight, and a clean safe area outdoors. They dine on pesticide-, chemical-, and GMO-free feed as well as bugs outside. They are healthy and therefore are never administered antibiotics.

All Natural means it that does not contain artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives and is minimally processed. The term Free Range doesn't necessarily guarantee a clean, safe area outdoors, and those birds can be treated with antibiotics.  Know your farm.  The All Natural birds that we are offering are NOT administered antibiotics nor animal by-products.  They are raised in an animal friendly environment.  If you are not getting an organic bird, at the very least, make sure to choose an AF (antibiotic- & hormone-free) bird and one that has room to move from a farm that is animal friendly.

IMPORTANT:  Turkeys will not be available at pick up if your coordinator is Vegan, Raw, Vegetarian or is offended by meat so we will offer an alternate pick up spot for you and your bird to rendezvous.

Payment is due TODAY, October 14th.

Please note on the size:  While we cannot guarantee a size, we will do the best we can within your requested range.  We plan to make them available for you the week of Thanksgiving.   If your bird is bigger, you'll pay the diff at pick up, if smaller, we'll credit you.

Of course, our shares Thanksgiving week will contain all the fixin's for a beautiful traditional holiday meal including sweet potatoes, green beans, fresh cranberries, oranges, hard squash, lettuce for salads, sweet tomatoes, apples, onions, carrots, potatoes and more as well as RECIPES to delight friends and family.  If you want two shares that week or if you are not normally scheduled to pick up a share but would like one, give us at least two weeks notice so we can plan properly for you.

Subscriptions make it easy to make on time payments for your share
Payment is due at least one week before your next scheduled pick up.  Some of us like giving payment to our coordinator but many of us prefer to do it online with a card.  We now make it even easier to avoid the $5 late fee by offering: Set up auto payments and forget about it - it's done for you at the interval you choose so no late fee, just glorious shares of the freshest organize to tantalize your taste buds and keep you healthy.  Now if we can just set up auto pick up and auto cooking, hmmm...

Use Paypal online to subscribe to your share and any regular add-ons weekly or every other week.

Coming Up:
11
We'll have some delicious treats for our healthy goblins next week including all CERTIFIED ORGANIC:
  • delicious sweet Honeycrisp Apples
  • Kiwi Berries - whaaa? you say!  just you wait!
  • Fair Trade Bananas
  • Red Seedless Grapes
  • Pumpkin Pie Squash
  • Witch Fingers, I mean Asparagus
  • LOCAL FloridaTomatoes
  • LOCAL Florida Cucumbers
  • LOCAL Florida Avocados
  • LOCAL Florida Squash
  • Spinach Bunches
  • Romaine Lettuce
  • and more!
As usual, we'll include recipes to help you use all the fresh organic in your box.  We'll also have fun with them this week in enticing your little ghouls to try new foods.
If I Need to Skip a Share, Do I just Not Pay?
It is no trouble to skip a share for one or more weeks while on vacation or when you have a little too much going on in life.  We simply ask you to TELL US.  Send an email, call your coordinator, just let us know that you need to suspend pick up and when you will resume (an exact date) so that we don't miss your start.  If you are unsure, you can leave it open but just let us know that.  You would still prepay for the next share.

Payment is due at least one week before your SCHEDULED pick up, so it depends if you are weekly or bi-weekly.  If payment is not received in time, and if you did not notify us that you would be missing that next share, we will still order for you and you will be responsible for that share and a $5 late fee.  We just ask that you give us notice to suspend; do not assume nonpayment equates to no share because we order based upon your scheduled pick up.

22What do I bring when I pick up my share?
  1. Bring some bags - bring some boxes or bags from the grocery store or reusable cotton bags (I'm Organic has them 50% off now!) or get those groovy huge cooler bags from Costco or bags made from recycled materials so that we can pack your share each week for you to take home easily.
  2. Bring a smile and the anticipation of meeting people who share your concerns for good food, good health, and a healthier planet.
  3. Bring an enthusiasm for real food and fresh organic produce, cooking, swapping recipes and menu tips, maybe even seeing a new fruit or vegetable to tantalize your taste buds.
  4. And don't forget to bring your payment for your next share.  Remember that your coordinator is not responsible for making change so if you are bringing cash, bring the exact amount or we'll credit your next share for any overpayment.  If you are bringing a check, please have it made out to "Annie's Buying Club" before arriving for the amount of your next share.  If paying online, remember to pay online for your NEXT share BEFORE picking up your produce to avoid the $5 late fee.
NEW - $35 FRUIT ONLY Share
And we still offer our $45 FRUITY BOOTY Share with fewer and more basic vegetables and more fruits.

44We are going to test out a new FRUIT ONLY share for $35.  Some of our biweekly members would like a fruit share in between and the $20 share doesn't offer enough fruit.  This would be a new $35 fruit share which would include no vegetables at all.

This is a great option for members who just want more fruit in between shares so we're trying to see how much interest we'd have for this - let me know.

Remember we still have the popular FRUITY BOOTY share which is $45 and includes extra fruits and some basic vegetables (so you would still get potatoes, broccoli or cauliflower every once in a while, carrots, and other basic well-loved veggies, but no leafy greens or lettuce for the most part.)  This option has been really wonderful for many members.  Be sure to choose the option that's best for you.

New and Haven't Started Yet?

Just let us know which location and how you made your first payment.
Receive a bountiful box (up to 35lbs - usually 20-30lbs because we get lighter more expensive things like berries regularly and we go by VALUE!! - and up to a $60+ value!) of the freshest seasonal certified organic fruits and vegetables for only $45!
  • No Start Up Costs
  • No Annual Dues
  • No Membership Fees
  • No Long Term Commitment (we ask you try us for only 3 shares)
  • No Big Obligation for Your Valuable Time (just pick it up!)
  • No More Paying Retail
  • No Boring Assortment of the same heavy items each share
  • No More Excuses Not To Offer Your Family the Freshest Organics!
Working together we have the power to buy in bulk directly from farms, distributors and manufacturers.  Eliminating the middle-man has a positive effect on our world, the quality of our food, and our pocketbook.  We reduce our carbon footprint by buying together and getting it direct.  We receive farm fresh produce since it arrives so soon after harvest.  We support local farms and their work in ecological harmony with our planet.  We always choose local Florida produce first and then supplement with other quality organic fruits and vegetables to make our boxes unique, colorful, and delicious.  Recipes are included each week to help you try something new.

As you know, the shares have been fantastic!  That's thanks to our growing membership - stronger buying power in action with our bigger shares and diverse selection!  A great mix of fruits and vegetables, with enough choices of kinds of shares and add on options to make this fit into our own healthy lifestyle.  Choose the:
  • Full Share at $45 - mix of fruit and vegetables
  • Half Share at $35 - smaller mix of the same (less quantity, some fewer items)
  • Fruity Booty $45 - heavier on fruit and lighter on leafy greens and veggies
  • Veggie/Berries $35 - more leafies and veggies w/berries as the only fruit (this share does not include white potatoes, corn, or carrots)
  • Fruit Only $35 share - ONLY fruit ideal as an in between share for those who need more fruit between their biweekly shares
Customize your box with optional add-ons:
  • + $5 Vegetable add-on - for those who want an additional lettuce and leafy green and maybe another tomato or onion or other  vegetable
  • + $10 Fruit Share add-on - for those who want more fruit this option adds another 2-3 kinds of fruit or more of the fruits included in the regular share
  • + $20 Fruit Share add-on - includes the $10 fruit share plus even more, usually another variety or two of fruit
Now we have an box to meet everyone's needs!
Thank you for your glorious emails letting me know how much you are enjoying the shares and how it has improved the quality of your food and your life.

Join us in making the world a better place, one tasty organic bite at a time.

How Can I Help?
Buying Club Coordinators receive their box of produce at no charge for receiving and distributing the food.  We need homes or offices where we can drop off the delivery.  You help sort the beautiful produce.  As an added bonus, you get first dibs on some extras that may be included and you can share them with the group.  We are looking for people who are passionate about organics, love fresh produce, are organized, have a location that is convenient, and one that is accessible by a truck.

Please help by letting others know about our organic buying club.  Groups are forming throughout Florida!

Thank you for forwarding this newsletter, adding a link to your blog, mentioning us in your yahoo and meet-up groups, emailing friends in Facebook, Twitter and other online groups.

Grab some flyers or we can send you some to share at work and with friends who may be interested in fresh affordable organics including: the yoga studio, gym, mommy groups, work, church, synagogue, school, anywhere you think there are people interested in more affordable and fresher options for organics.

The more members, the bigger our selection, the better prices we can command, the bigger the value of our boxes, and the more we can continue to share in our club.
Thank You!

11111 What Makes Our Shares SO Special?
Super fresh.  Great value.  Always a nice mix.  Good balance of fruit and vegetables.  Never boring.  Never too many "strange" things that are new.  Good quantities.  Recipes included to help us use everything in our box.  We don't get overwhelmed with the same things all the time.  We always source locally first whenever possible.  Our boxes are always the right balance of new and more unique items.  We offer delicious new things to taste.  And because we are buying in bulk as a group, we receive a great value of the freshest organic produce.

Shares have been glorious with a mix of well loved favorites and some new more unique fruits or veggies to dazzle us.  We post what is expected the Friday before your expected delivery.  Some of the special things of recent include:
  • Purple Cauliflower - deep purple bursting with antioxidants
  • Honeycrisp Apples - super sweet-tart with a hint of honey and oh so delicious.  These are not the typical cold storage apple and are only around for another couple weeks so I hope to get them every week either in fruit share add ons or in the regular share.  If you are not an apple love, well, try THESE apples, and if you still don't want so many, we'll try to swap them out for you, I know others at your pick up would probably be glad to swap something for more apples, especially the one and only short season Honeycrisp!
  • Asparagus - coming in next week!!  Sweet Mini-Peppers expected next week too!

  • Seckel Pears - also called Sugar Pears, these tiny little pears are perfect for lunchboxes and oh so pretty too!

  • Kiwi Berries - WOW!  They are a bite-size burst of kiwi juiciness.  You have to bite them in half to enjoy the mini kiwi look on the inside with all the crunchy black seeds.  They have a nice bite from the smooth green skin with a pink blush - how fun to try something new!

  • Rainbow Heirloom and Cherry Tomatoes have been in shares depsite the ridiculously high price in the stores, lucky for us!  We've also been including well-loved Blueberries.

  • Tri-Color Grapes have been FANTASTIC super sweet with green, red and black seedless grapes.

  • Broccolini, also called Baby Broccoli has been a nice change with tender stems.
It's been a wonderful mix of fresh fruits and veggies.  Our Asian-inspired box was wonderful with Bok Choy, Scallions, Garlic, Ginger.  This past week was a steakless Steakhouse Specials box with Leeks, Potatoes, Parsley, Spinach, Avocado and more.  We are working on Middle-Eastern and Indonesian boxes with foods we all use but recipes to help you prepare them in a different way.  If you have ideas for another kind of box, let me know - we are always interested in offering a little something unique each week on our culinary journey together.

LOCAL ORGANIC PASTURED EGGS

2 We are using our buying club power to purchase LOCAL protein rich eggs from hens that are PASTURED here in south Florida.  These eggs are CERTIFIED ORGANIC.  The hens have a huge roaming area.  They are allowed to graze on grass and bugs and fed a grain mix of organic corn, oats, beans and other nutrients.  The mix does NOT have nor are the hens fed any SOY.

Florida organic standards are quite high and she is in compliance with all state regulations as well as the USDA certification process, all of which is quite costly to this new young farm.  Join us in supporting this local family farm.

This farm does offer some brown eggs but most are white (remember the egg shell color only has to do with the color of the hen feathers and lobes.)  Eggs are $7/dozen.  Pre-order these eggs by emailing me no later than the Thursday before your pick up or ideally at pick up with your coordinator.  Please prepay for your eggs by the week before pick-up, when you pay for your next share, as we will only order as many eggs as pre-ordered.

333We are going to test out a new FRUIT ONLY share for $35.

Despite it being off FL season, we are still making the extra effort to support local FL farmers.  It's important to choose local, even the little bit that is available, in the off-season too as every little bit counts.

Our membership is growing and we see our buying power in action with our bigger shares!  We offer some options so that you can choose what's best for you:
  • Full Share at $45 - mix of fruit and vegetables
  • Half Share at $35 - smaller mix of the same (less quantity, some fewer items)
  • Fruity Booty $45 - heavier on fruit and lighter on leafy greens and veggies
  • Veggie/Berries $35 - more leafies and veggies w/berries as the only fruit (this share does not include white potatoes, corn, or carrots)

Thank You!

Greetings!

We now have even more locations and box options to make this fit into your healthy lifestyle.

This week we are picking up Pastured Organic eggs from a local family farm with Free Roaming Hens.

Local produce is slowly picking up - we have an opportunity to support a local small family farm that offers "CERTIFIED NATURALLY GROWN" produce.  Though not certified organic, we looked at the standards and know the growers well and feel comfortable in supporting them, however, this is YOUR buying club so allow us to share that information with you and you can tell us if this will be okay for you and your family too.  We will only add these fruits to the add-on fruit share and only if you do not object to the lack of organic certification.  We will continue to only offer CERTIFIED ORGANIC fruits and vegetables in our regular shares.  Please see more details below to understand the standards.

Tired of the limited selection, poor quality and high prices of organics at the grocery store -  Join The Club!

Better Options.  Better Quality.  Better Selection.

Fresh.  Affordable.  Organic.

YOM KIPPOR Pick Up Schedule

Yom Kippor falls on Monday, September 28th this year.  That week our pick up schedule will change.

If you are in Miami-Dade and normally pick up on Monday, you will instead pick up on WEDNESDAY.

If you are in Broward (EXCEPT HOLLYWOOD) and normally pick up on Monday, you will pick up on TUESDAY instead during weeks where a holiday falls on Monday, including the upcoming Labor Day and Yom Kippor holidays.  If you are in Holllywood, you will pick up on Wednesday instead of Monday.

If you normally pick up Monday in Gainesville, that will move to Wednesday as well.  If you are in Ocala another location outside of South Florida and normally pick up on Monday, please ask your coordinator as some may still offering Monday as your pick up day.

If you are in Broward, Monroe, Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, Ft Myers or any other location and regularly get a Tuesday delivery, that will continue unchanged.   We are only moving Monday deliveries to either Tuesday or Wednesday but all Tuesday deliveries will remain the same.

LOCAL ORGANIC PASTURED EGGS
3 We are using our buying club power to purchase LOCAL protein rich eggs from hens that are PASTURED here in south Florida.

Too Early to Talk Turkey?
Maybe a little, but thought I'd ask so we can plan.  If you don't do the bird, no worries, skip this section; and if your coordinator is vegan, raw, or vegetarian, and you want one, we will offer you another location for pick up so as not to inconvenience your gracious her or him.
11
We are now sourcing FRESH Organic and  FRESH All-Natural Turkeys to grace our holiday tables for Thanksgiving.  Let me know if you have an interest in getting a bird and if so, please specify:
  1. Organic Free Roaming
  2. All-Natural Free Roaming
  3. Kosher Organic (we'll try with enough interest),
and the approximate size:
  • 8-10 lbs
  • 10-15 lbs
  • 15-20 lbs
  • over 20lbs
We will get the best price for members but it is based upon how many we can preorder.  Just let me know if you are interested, I am not asking for a monetary commitment and I understand you'll want to get the pricing first, as will I, but we can't get the lowest pricing until we know how many members may be interested in fresh turkeys so please let me know.

Please note on the size:  While we cannot guarantee a size, we will do the best we can within your requested range.  We plan to make them available for you the week of Thanksgiving.  These will be FRESH and NEVER frozen.

Of course, our shares that week will contain all the fixin's for a beautiful traditional holiday meal including sweet potatoes, green beans, fresh cranberries, oranges, hard squash, lettuce for salads, sweet tomatoes, apples, onions, carrots, potatoes and more.
Local Certified Naturally Grown Mamey
111We only choose CERTIFIED organic produce for our shares.  We have an opportunity to support a local grower that works under organic standards but cannot afford the certification process for organic, however he is certified naturally grown.  We would only include these in the Fruit Share add-on and ONLY if you do not object to this.

Personally, we have researched this farm and their practices and have spoken to the grower at length and feel confident in his produce and procedures.  We also feel good about supporting someone locally here in south Florida that is doing right by our environment.

Like organic, Certified Naturally Grown is regulated and takes three years.  Synthetic substances, radiation and sewage sludge fertilizer are not allowed.  They work to minimize soil erosion and manage soil nutrients naturally through crop rotation.  Weeds are handled by mowing, mulching, and hard work.  Pest management is primarily by the introduction of predators, traps and nonsynthetic repellents.

Right now this farm has wonderful Mamey Sapote for us.  Mamey is a huge tropical fruit that get soft when ripe.  You can take out the tip where it was attached to the tree and if it's orange, it's ready to enjoy.  They are normally quite expensive and a treat for those of us in the know.  It is creamy and rich.  Many use it in smoothies and ice creams to make them thick.  The texture is sort of like an avocado or sweet potato and the taste is unique, maybe like a cooked sweet potato with honey and vanilla, mmmm, I just love them!  Be sure to wait until they are soft and ripe.

Let me know if you get a $10 or $20 Fruit add on and would object to getting this as part of your share.

Greetings!

Our change in pick up days is working out better for most members, I realize it was better the other way for some of you and I'm sorry about that - you know that we will do our best to figure out a way to accommodate you.  We are working on pick up time options now that we are getting adjusted to the change.  I want to thank you for working with us through this transition.  Please continue to let me know how we can improve our club as we do listen to feedback and adjust accordingly.

Thanks for recommending us to friends!  We are now offering even more locations and a variety of boxes to meet our growing membership demands for more or less fruits and vegetables.

Boxes have been a fun mix of seasonal summer fruits and vegetables; we are transitioning to fall so the boxes will overlap both seasons a bit including some apples and hard squash with some summer fruits and vegetables.  As you know, this is decidedly not Florida season but we are still calling around looking for what organic farms have locally.  We always strive to support our local growers even during off season.  The recipes have been great at helping us try new things too.  Please send your favorite ways to use up the fresh produce too and we'll include them.

Why do you get Kale & Broccoli regularly?
2Broccoli, Kale, Cauliflower, Cabbage, Arugula, Bok Choy, Brussels Sprouts, Radishes, Broccoli Raab, Collards, Watercress, Rutabaga, Mustard Greens are all members of the brassica family.  This family of vegetables help WARD OFF cancers and other disease AND actually help our bodies FIGHT the disease itself!

They are loaded with vitamins, antioxidants, chlorophyll and special super powers like sulforaphane.

Broccoli is a standard for most of us and even kids tend to like it.  Most of us get that weekly from the grocery store so we try to include it most weeks.

There are several types of kale.  We have received curly and straight or Lacinata Kale.  There are many ways to prepare Kale and if you have tried them all and still don't like it, let me suggest you pulverize it with some basil, walnuts, garlic and olive oil into a pesto and add that to soups, stock, pasta, as a sandwich spread, no one will even know it's there but you'll get the health benefits.

We should be eating 9 servings of vegetables each day and this family of super-vegetables should be included daily for optimal health.

Eat your greens!  And if you can't eat them, Juice and drink them.  Chug-a-lug!

HOWEVER, next week, no kale or broccoli.  Got to mix it up a bit you know!

1What do I bring when I pick up my share?

Thank You!

You Asked:

What if I go on vacation?  Can I suspend my share or am I stuck paying for it if I don't find someone to take it over?

We know you don't want the stress of worrying about your share or finding someone to pick it up while you are away.  Nor do you want to add stress to your group's costs when you are about to embark on some much needed R & R, we understand that.  We have no trouble suspending your share for a future pick up date when you go on vacation.  We ask for a week's notice, but we know we can all have an unexpected emergency. Just let us know and we will do our best to find someone to purchase your share so that we can apply your payment to a future share.  No worries.  We are here to make this easy and enjoyable for you.

However, if you do find someone to take over your share, we appreciate it!  Many times that's a great way for someone to try out the club and they usually end up enjoying shares regularly thereafter.

Local Pastured Organic Eggs
5We are now using our buying club power to purchase LOCAL eggs from hens that are allowed to graze and PASTURE here in south Florida.  These eggs are CERTIFIED ORGANIC and are NOT fed any soy!

We WILL have these eggs starting August 3rd!

If you want to learn more about pastured eggs and these in particular, check my blog in coming weeks for more information.

Soy-Free.  Pastured.  Local.  Farm-Fresh.  Organic Eggs.

If you have paid for your share and live in one of the drop cities, you will get another email later today confirming your pick up location address, coordinator name,  pick up times, and more.

If you have not yet paid but you live in one of these areas, we MAY have enough extra for your share too.  Please reply to this email and get payment in today.

If you have not yet paid
If you have not yet paid and you live in another location, get your payment in by Tuesday so that we can offer deliveries to your area on Friday.  You can pay by:
  • bank transfer if you have Bank of America - ask and we'll send you the informationcheck,
  • cashier's check, money order mailed to our addresscash - prepay for your share by meeting with your coordinator now.  reply to this email and we'll have him or her get in touch with you.
  • bill pay through your bank - this is a convenient way to be paid before your next share delivery.
You must be prepaid to get your share.  It's not a question that I know you're good for it and that we're friends, it's that I have to pay the farms and suppliers when I place the order three days in advance.  I don't personally have those funds to front for you.  This is a buying club, not a store.  We need to have all the money in to confirm the number of shares and so I can pay for our produce.  We all have to work together to make this happen.  Thanks for your cooperation.

What is Organic worth?
1
Nowadays we are all cutting back.  We start to wonder if choosing organic is really worth it.

Our health is our most precious commodity; without that, we have nothing.  Especially in times of stress, we need to take care of our body with good nutritious foods (fuel) so that our body can function properly and keep healthy.

Organic food is a better value because
  • it does not tax our system with added pesticides and chemicals
  • it offers more antioxidants to fight free radicals and stress
  • it is more nutritious and therefore packs more bang for it's buck
Consumers realize that real food is a better bargain over convenience prepackaged foods.  Recently grocery stores have seen sales in eggs, dairy, and produce hold strong while sales of processed and prepackaged foods dip.  Pound for pound, the price of wholesome real foods like fruits and vegetables, are a better value for our body and our wallet.

Annie's Buying Club makes choosing organic produce an affordable option for us all.  We include what you, the majority of members at each location, request and of course we include the biggest offenders on the Top To Buy Organic Lists.  By supporting one another in our buying club, we can live sustainably and on a budget!  Get more tips on Living Lean & Green

A Rose by Any Other Name would Still Smell as Sweet.
Well, maybe not.
111
Flowers are an eternal sign of love.  They delight our senses and inspire our spirit.  There's nothing like getting a surprise delivery of fresh beautiful flowers!

We know that our act of purchasing anything has an impact on people in other parts of our world and our planet.  Sadly, conventional flowers are grown and harvested under less than optimal conditions.

The conventional flower industry keeps those flowers perfect for our enjoyment with a heavy douse of chemical fertilizers, insecticides, growth hormones, fungicides, and highly toxic pesticides.  Imported flowers can contain unregistered chemicals, even those otherwise banned in the U.S.

Studies have found that Roses contain 1000 times more cancer-causing pesticides than food!

The people who work on the flower farms are subject to a toxic environment and bring the residue home to their families in their hair and on their clothes.

When you touch a conventional flower, those chemicals can enter your body through your skin.  Children notoriously touch things and  raise their hands to their mouths so they are ingesting it even more directly.

When your loved one thanks you with an appreciating nose to the rose, you'll feel better knowing that only pure fragrance is being inhaled instead of the addition of poisonous pesticides.  Organic and eco-flowers don't cost much more than conventional flowers, but do show you care so more for the environment and for your loved one.

Stop to smell the flowers without inhaling poisons.

Choose organic flowers to protect our water supply, farm workers and their families, your loved ones, and to support sustainable practices for a lovelier future for us all.

Learn more about Healthy Flowers and how our purchase impacts others by linking here.

mmmm....  Chocolate!
33
Ideal for Valentine's, Chocolate makes us feel good because it contains the LOVE chemical phenylethylamine.

Chocolate helps relieve stress, relaxes our blood vessels, and improves blood circulation.  Dark Chocolate contains almost twice the antioxidant value of Red Wine and three times that of Green Tea so yes, it's true, chocolate is good for us!  But chocolate is not as sweet if you are enjoying those big name conventional brands, they have a bitter side.

Acres of forest are destroyed with conventional cacao and the top branches are trimmed so much that native animals lose their home.  Heavy pesticides are used on traditional cacao crops and these toxic chemicals then drain into neighboring water, streams and forest.  Conventional cacao farm workers are paid minimally and sometimes nothing at all; even worse, the Ivory coast, where most conventional chocolate is grown, is notorious for using children slaves to harvest the cacao.

Your sweetie deserves a sweet treat without the bitterness.  Make a difference by choosing fair trade organic chocolate.

Just 50 people buying one bar of Fair Trade Chocolate each week, instead of conventional chocolates, will help maintain an acre of wild lush forest and jungle.  Always Choose Organic, Shade Grown, Slavery-Free, Fair Trade, Bird-Friendly Chocolate.

Dear Annie, 44

Flowers and Chocolates always come to mind when we think of our sweetie this time of year.  Nowadays it's easy to make a healthier, eco-friendly choice and really show we care about our Valentine and our planet.  Even in these tough economic times, there are affordable options that are better for our special loved one and Mother Earth.

Choose Fair-Trade Organic Chocolate instead of typical chocolates that use high levels of pesticides and clear acres of rainforest.

Choose Organic Eco-Flowers to offer a fair wage to families in other countries and reduce the amount of chemicals forced upon our planet.

Even better, link below and get both with this nifty promotion:

Hip Organic Mama Blog

We start the New Year with lofty plans to be healthy, eat more vegetables, exercise regularly, and enjoy life.  We head to our local grocery store full of hope only to find that the limited selection of organic produce may be our demise, and what we can find is expensive and not all that beautiful.  You're not alone.  Join the club.

Annie's Organic Buying Club was created to help, combining my expertise in the organic food industry with the real need we have for fresh organic fruits and vegetables. We offer seasonal organic produce at well below retail.  You can also pre-order a case of something you need any given week (like a case of cucumbers, a 25lb bag of carrots, a case of romaine, a wheatgrass tray, young thai coconuts, more.)  Each group is customized to the needs of the members at that location.

Receive a bountiful box (25-35lbs and up to a $60 value!) of the freshest seasonal certified organic fruits and vegetables for only $45!
  • No Start Up Costs
  • No Dues
  • No Membership Fees
  • No Big Obligation for Your Valuable Time
  • No More Paying Retail
  • No More Excuses Not To Offer Your Family the Freshest Organics!
Let us help you keep your New Year's resolutions - Join The Club!

New Year's Resolutions
4
This is the year to get healthy.  Especially during stressful times, and the economy is impacting everyone now, it's important to give your body the proper fuel and rest to keep up a strong immune system.  Eating healthy doesn't have to break the bank either.  Annie's Buying Club makes organics a real option.  And check out my blog, Hip Organic Mama, for tips in stretching your healthy food budget further.
  1. Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke.  This is easier said than done, so get the proper support to help you succeed.
  2. Go through your cupboards and toss (and don't buy) any foods with:
    1. High Fructose Corn Syrup
    2. Hydrogenated or Partially Hydrogenated Oils
    3. Artificial Sweeteners like Asparatame, Nutrasweet, Saccharine, Splenda, Sucralose
    4. Artificial Colors and Flavors
  3. Eat Your Veggies.  Mama was right.  Not only will it do your body good, you will set a good example for the kids.  Juicing* vegetables is an easy way to get your greens.  Make sure you are eating super-vegetables including Broccoli, Tomatoes, Garlic, Mushrooms, Avocados, Cilantro, Spinach and Leafy Greens.  Enjoy fresh Fruits regularly including apples (you know, an apple a day!), berries, kiwi, cantaloupe, and citrus.
  4. Get your Omega 3s.  The best source is wild Pacific fish (like wild Alaskan Salmon & Tuna) but you can also get some from flax seeds, chia seeds, and walnuts.  Grass-fed meats contain CLA which is similar to Omega 3s so swap out grain-fed dairy and meats for grass-fed.
  5. Eliminate or greatly reduce Sugar.  Use instead Agave Nectar, Maple Syrup, and Honey.
  6. Drink Water.  Have a bottle readily available throughout the day.  Be sure to RECYCLE plastic bottles or use a reusable stainless steel container like the Kleen Kanteen.
  7. Exercise.  Walk and get some fresh air and sunshine, throw in a dvd, find a "video" on youtube, get out to the gym, lift the baby, take the stairs, park far from the door, do yoga, get a set of inexpensive resistance bands, join a sports team, rebound, bike or walk there instead of taking the car if possible; there are so many ways to add some exercise to our day.  Start somewhere.  Best to schedule or time just slips away.  Treat yourself to organic cotton or bamboo clothing and eco-friendly shoes to motivate your work out routine while you support a sustainable environment.
  8. Soak up some Sun.  Luckily living in Florida allows us to do this year-round.  Sunshine is an important source of Vitamin D and keeping our body and spirit healthy.  Get out in the sun mid-day for a limited time each day.
  9. Doing the above will in turn help you Sleep better, which is just as important for good health.  Our bodies are busy working to make us healthy and keep us in balance as we snooze.
  10. Relax, Forgive, Love, Get Involved, Care for the Planet, Be Grateful - every day.
*Juicing does not mean buying juice or even buying vegetable juices in the grocery store, but rather juicing whole organic fruits and vegetables in a juicing machine or simply in a high speed blender (then strain out the pulp if you like.)   There are great recipes online and you will quickly learn how to make delicious vitamin dense juice that even the kids will drink (after some coaxing, perhaps, but they really will!)

Assistant Coordinators get their share for only $35 for helping sort the boxes for the other members of that group.

Can't do either but still want to help?  Please help us spread the word!  Forward this newsletter, add a link to your blog, mention it in your yahoo and meet-up groups, send emails to online clubs.  Print flyers or ask us to send you some to share with others who may be interested in fresh affordable organics.  Drop off a stack at your yoga studio, gym, mommy group, work, church, synagogue, school, with family and friends, anywhere you think there are people interested in more affordable and fresher options for organics.  The more members, the bigger our selection, the better prices we can command, the bigger the value of our boxes, and the more we can continue to share in our club.
Thank You!
